7th November, Artists Practice, statements & methodologies

Today was predominantly teams meetings discussing practice and frameworks but I also explored some ideas for my next painting.
This photograph has been chosen based on my research interests.
I'm now playing with the shapes to check proportions and get familiar with the lines, and also thinking about how to approach it with paint/ blocking in colour/ testing.

Tested masking to get a sense of how brush stokes could work if didn't have to consider the areas I don't want to brush over - I can paint the hat and hair black but don't want to have to work around the face - I want the brush marks to be free, so thinking of masking.

Notes re how I approached the face, light to dark and then added light again. - Spoke to Laura in the studio recently and she mentioned oil painting rules - re dark to light and I questioned if this is something that I do.

Rachel Goodyear talking about her practice framework - really interesting, I have a better idea of how she approaches ideas around the female / how it's represented in her work, for example with wolves and pointy hats. Ian Brown also explained how he approaches his practice using appropriation - which was really interesting to see how a curiosity evolved into something bigger and arrived at a place that posed valid questions about our relationship with culture.

Notes from my group around how they understand my work from my explanation. I think what I'm saying is coming through but I need to fully understand how to convey it myself.
