I've had second thoughts about the questionnaires I'd prepped around how people recognise the term "mother" and if they identify as one etc.  I'm thinking that the questionnaire needs to be focused more around how people experience social roles; to find out if people recognise them. If they're aware. Do they challenge them? How do they feel about them and would they offer any photos to work with. Putting my proposal together is helping to shape what I'm trying to identify.

Original questionnaire:

                                                ------------------------------------------------------

Project:

Your mum.

Portraits/paintings based on people engaged in a discussion about mothers.

The aim is to open a discourse around expectation, social influence, experience, and the future.

Do you identify as female?

Are you a mother or grandmother?

Did you want to be a mother or grandmother?

Do you have a role model who is a mother or grandmother?

Do you have religious opinions or beliefs about being a mother or grandmother?

Do you have any concerns for mothers or grandmothers?

How do you feel about the term matriarch?

Do you think society is accepting of mothers and grandmothers?

Do you think religion is accepting of mothers and grandmothers?

What is the social impact of you being or not being a mother or grandmother?

What one thing would you change?

Had a really interesting artist talk by Nisha Duggal.

Spent a lot of today bouncing between my website and proposal pack, sourcing information and making sure images present well.

Some of my PNG's are being converted by the site to AVIF which don't appear on mobile devices.  Tried Squoosh to change a PNG to a Web.P but this doesn't load either. (GIMP) also suggested. I chose PNG's as they're supposed to be crisper and translate well online.

I find I need a better way to archive things, both images and statements. So far they've been documented year to year, exhibition by exhibition but I need to create a library / index that I can properly dip into.
