12 October. Ethics, going online, "canvas corners" and studio time.
Studio Practice today: I spend a lot of time trying to get the corners on my canvasses how I want them - I forget how I cut the edges once folded so I've taken photos and approached this one with the same cut on all corners. I think this works for me. I purchased a canvas stretcher (clamp) last year and am using this to make my canvasses so that they're taught. I have decided that I don't like white gesso - only because I like to see the actual fabric of the canvas so I'm investing in more transparent (note - still need to try rabbit skin glue).
- Ethics lecture with Michael Day - This made me really consider that I need to form a plan for my project. I've been content to start the year by testing oil and print mediums but I need a framework and to establish my project scope.
- The female roles that I've been researching all lead me back to motherhood (being a mother or not) and the female experience. I'm going to focus on how these historical "roles" impact the current female experience.
- I've collated a set of questions to ask people so will organise some time to discuss the ethics form and determine how to start and organise myself.
Project name: Your mum. I intend to produce a body of work from photographs that people feel represent them as a mother.
The aim is to open a discourse around expectation, social influence, experience, and the future.
- I'm making the final touches to my website and adding the domain and favicon
Progress on the oil ideas:
I got impatient and wanted to see the contrasts in treatments/painting. I'd forgotten that I'd masked off some bare canvas sections which I prefer. I don't know why but I like the exposed bare fabric.
Passed Alistair Woods work on the way out of the Gallery and took another look - I really like the tonal effects and textures in his work. In comparison my work looks crude and cartoon like.
