Starting level 6 The first week.

Studio set up 2nd October - ready to start.

Over the summer I looked at some of my own work and also considered which work I was drawn to at exhibitions.  I want to explore textures and surfaces more and retain marks that "happen" alongside developing focused oil painting techniques. I want them to sit together in the same work.

I've established that I like painting on stretched canvas but I also like textures and want to be able to rub and scratch into work.  Ideally, I'm looking to find a way of combining textures and abstract marks alongside more refined areas of concentrated detail in oil.

Monday 4.10.23

Following introduction to Personal Project and Professional practice with Ian Brown

  • Added mod roc to stretched canvas and a canvas board
  • Added 2 -3 gesso coats to protect and prime

 Canvas board

Stretched canvas with added mod roc and gesso.
These were already sectioned with masking tape and primed influenced by visiting artist talk by Alistair Woods. I really like how Alistair has contrasting sections of different paint treatments in his work.

I made a quick brainstorm too establish what was in my head. I'm keen to crack on as I know what I want to investigate in terms of subject matter and materials so I'm not too concerned with the theory at this stage but did start some research to see which discourse I could connect with and identify some contemporary artists who I could look to and respond to.

I've been reading Witches and Wicked bodies - a book to accompany the exhibition in 2003 in the Scottish National Museum, which features  artworks around females and the portrayal of witches.
I'm interested in motherhood but want to explore how the females "natural" ability to reproduce has been understood or rejected by patriarchy resulting in different roles that women are coerced into.
I prepared notes for a tutorial with Rebecca Davies 06.10.23

Works by Cindy Sherman and Kiki Smith

I'm interested in how an image translates into a different medium so have started this, referencing a Kiki Smith Photograph.
  • This is a shop brought canvas board with mod roc and gesso.
  • I made a crude shape in the surface to give a flatter fabric surface for the face and hands
  • Oil with thinners added used to create base to work with
    • I intend to keep some of the marks made by the wash running over the surface but I also want to rub into and scratch or add to
  • There is a green/ yellow layer beneath the dark grey brown wash -
    • I'm interested to see if this is exposed with rubbing or scratching.
Documentation

  • Had a think about my methodology on 06.10.23 I want to be efficient with my time so need to be able to record easily and concisely.
  • I will still have a "sketchbook" (or series of bulldog clipped work" to collate physical work, scribbles and general testing.
